Doctor's consultation notes

What kind of hair do you want

When you wear your bangs down versus tying your hair up, different areas become noticeable. We don’t just consider proportions; we ask about your usual style, the looks you want to try, and the limits of expression.

What kind of hair do you want

A hairline is not made only to look good in photos.

How will you wear it?

When designing a hairline, something as important as facial proportions is how you usually wear your hair and what style you want in the future. Do you wear bangs, expose your forehead, frequently tie your hair, like to tuck hair behind your ears, or part your hair in a certain way—depending on the desired hairstyle, the hairline needed can differ even for the same face.

The pretty spot changes

If you mainly wear bangs, the height seen from the front and the volume in the M-shaped areas are important. Conversely, if you like styles that expose the forehead, you need to consider not only the frontal line but also how the temples and the side hairline connect, and even the sideburns visible when you tie your hair. A few millimeters of empty space that seem trivial from the front can look disproportionately large when you tie your hair.

Conversely, your proportions may look fine when you pull your hair back, but if you lower it to cover the sides, your forehead may appear high.

If you want a slicked-back style

A slicked-back style reveals the hairline most clearly. Therefore, how natural the line can look is as important as the shape. That naturalness is greatly influenced by hair thickness and direction and the presence of existing baby hairs. Even if the transplanted hair is slightly thick, if it can mix with existing baby hairs, a natural gradient forms at the boundary from skin to hair.

Even if there are almost no baby hairs, if the hair is fine, it can be styled to give the impression of baby hairs.

So I ask during design

“How do you usually wear your hair?” “After surgery, what hairstyle would you like to try?” Before deciding which hairline looks pretty, I want to know what hairline you want to live with. I also tell you whether the desired hairstyle is actually possible. Even someone who has wanted a lifetime of slicked-back hair may find a truly natural slicked-back style difficult if their hair is thick and they have almost no baby hairs.

In such cases, I explain both what can improve and what the limits are. It might be hard to get to a perfect slicked-back look, but you may comfortably tuck hair behind your ears, the areas that looked sparse when tying your hair may improve, and you won’t have to worry about your bangs flying in the wind.

Freedom of style

I don’t think a good consultation only talks about what can improve. You need to know how far things can improve and what might be difficult so you can decide how low to set the line, which design to choose, or whether to have surgery at all. Hairlines are not made just to look pretty in photos. The goal is to let you do what you want—tie your hair, tuck it behind your ears, or let the wind reveal your forehead—without worrying.

Bleeding, infection, scarring, folliculitis, temporary accompanying shedding, and other complications may occur after hair transplantation. There may be limits to density and naturalness depending on the original hair’s thickness and direction and the donor supply from the occipital region.
